What a blooming hydrangea taught me
Hi there,
I took a photo of this lace-cap hydrangea growing next to a parking garage this week, in between errands, and wrote the poem below. What stands out is the cluster of blooms closest up, the ones that draw my attention first. This is what it feels like when I'm able to show my full self out in the world.
Allow yourself to show your blooms,
Whatever they may be,
Display the true you.
I'll be the true me.
Showing Your Blooms
We tend to wait for the version of ourselves that has it all figured out before we let ourselves be seen. But the hydrangea didn't wait for better surroundings before it opened. It bloomed where it was planted, beside a concrete parking garage. Showing up as yourself doesn't mean arriving finished. It means letting what's already there be seen.
Rooted First
None of that blooming happens without the roots doing their quiet work underground. I find with some of my clients that physical grounding itself can be a challenge. I recommend practices that help you ground, through stillness, breath, and through attention to your body. This is often where showing up for yourself begins.
Bringing Your True Self Forward
Your true self isn't your most polished self. It's the version of you that's rooted enough to be truly present, honest enough to let itself be seen. That's not something you push toward. It's something you make room for.
