New to Energy Work - Part 1

Welcome to this new series - “New to Energy Work” - part of my Energy Wellness Journal Blog!

In my twelve years of practice, I’ve observed that about half of my clients are new to energy work or have had very few experiences with it.

The large majority of my clients, including those new to energy work, are highly sensitive people, artists, writers and empaths who have felt and experienced things very deeply in their lives. They often find their way to me through word-of-mouth referrals from professionals and also through my clients.

One of my new acquaintances was intrigued about my work and after she had known me a while, set up a consultation. Since she and I had done collaborative writing together on a project, I had the idea of writing a series of articles about her beginning to receive energy work from me. She was delighted to share her experiences with others. Here is our initial account of our co-journey together, me as practitioner and she as the recipient.

Come Explore Energy Work with Us

Sandy’s entry:

I have a new friend Janelle (a pseudonym). She and I met and have worked together on a common project for most of 2022. In this process, we began to share more about our lives. It turns out that Janelle is intrigued by energy work, having experienced it once years ago.

This article is being written through the eyes of an energy practitioner (me) and a new energy client.

Parts of it will be narrative, parts essay and we may even throw in direct dialogue with quotations. We’ll be making it up as we go along.

Come along on the journey with us!

Before the Consultation: The Universe Awaits

Hi, I’m Janelle. After getting to know Sandy, I decided to begin Energy Wellness sessions. I remembered that many years ago I had a Reiki session in which I received a tremendous amount of energy afterwards.

I really don’t know what to expect in my first consultation with Sandy. After reflection, I have taken some time and have written down what I am seeking.

A few years ago, I retired from a career working in IT. I helped people on a large scale by managing computer data, however, I never felt the satisfaction of personally meeting any of those people. Now in retirement, I am seeking more connection and visibility to make a difference in the world.

In 2003, I had the experience of going through major health issues. I'm enjoying good health now and I want to be more proactive about wellness. And, I wish to share wisdom gained from personal challenges I have overcome along the way.

The Consultation: Teaching Others to Fish

Janelle: I’m curious, how did you get into energy work?

Sandy: In 2006, I became ill and underwent chemotherapy, taking a long leave from the school district as a special educator. My mother read a local news article about the local Healing Touch clinic. I felt the immediate calming effects of the sessions and started to absorb some of the ideas behind energy work. In 2008 I joined a cohort group and began training as a HT practitioner.

Janelle: You say that you are an energy wellness educator? What is that?

Sandy: I think I’m a good example of someone who never knew about subtle energies operating inside us and all around us. As a late bloomer and I suppose as an educator, learning about my energy anatomy became very important to me. One of the first things I learned about my own system is that my energies were not grounded. Over time I latched on to the concept of energy wellness. I want to share with others what I have learned and what has helped me in all areas of my life. Being a master’s level educator, it was natural for me to see myself as an educator of energy wellness.

Janelle: What can I expect in sessions with you?

Sandy: I’ll teach you about your energy system and how to be a self-healer. Over several sessions, I’ll share helpful tools and help you develop your own daily energy practice to manage your own energy system. And then toward the end of each meeting, I’ll give you a distance energy session so you can relax and receive energy work to clear and optimize your energy. People typically feel a greater sense of wellness as they become more energetically grounded, centered and balanced.

Janelle: I like that you teach people how to help themselves.

Sandy: It’s like that old saying about it being better to teach someone how to fish, rather than just giving them fish. I love seeing people become independent in their energy wellness self-care!

Janelle’s First Energy Work Experience

Janelle: After the energy wellness education part of the session, Sandy muted the phone as my first energy work session started. This surprised me, as I thought she would be speaking throughout the session. Would I actually feel this energy process?  I was open to the session, however, I didn't want to just ‘imagine’ a sensation.

Gradually, I grew more and more relaxed. I felt a release of tension from my forehead & neck area, almost like a very gentle message. Beforehand, I had mentioned a couple of tender areas inside my left arm. I felt gentle pressure on my left shoulder, then on the inside arm areas mentioned.

Next, I felt a gentle wave sweep over me and it seemed like I was very lightly enveloped in my own safe energy environment. Totally relaxed, I envisioned a kitten, and then a friendly dog.  I then experienced a silver spherical shape, slowly advancing in an interesting, non-threatening way towards me. It was then replaced by a lighted, glowing window right in front of me, which gradually receded.

Before I knew it, I could hear Sandy’s voice again. The session was completed.  We discussed the session and how I felt.  Sandy said an after-energy assessment indicated my energy was more grounded. Sandy also sent an after-session email with suggestions for further cleansing/releasing any negative energy.

Afterwards, I spent a few minutes on my own, just relaxing and being in the moment. I journaled about my experience. The next day I had a sense of my energy being more centered, especially during day-to-day encounters with others.

More on the Energy Wellness process

Sandy: The underlying philosophy of my work is that people have the ability to be self-healers. As Nobel Prize winner Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the great theologian and medical missionary, stated, “Don’t blame, forgive, All healing is self-healing.”

I think it’s important for people to know they can learn about invisible, but very real, aspects of themselves. By learning about their energy anatomy and energetic tools, they can support themselves, mindfully managing their own energy system.

That can sound a little lofty; however, it’s really just people learning how their body feels when their energy is fully grounded, centered and balanced. With grounding energy work sessions, combined with their own self-healing work, they begin to feel a greater sense of well-being. Then, when the feeling of well-being goes away, they begin to make the connection that their energy has become misaligned and needs their attention.

In the first couple of sessions with people I help them develop their own Daily Energy Prep practice. One of the daily practices I teach people is adapted from Cyndi Dale’s twelve chakra system. It’s holistic, it’s straightforward, and best of all, it helps people move into self-healing.
